Writing Challenge — Day 9
Values & Beliefs
We are who we are. And we can become what we want to become. That’s our identity. It is not permanent. It is interchangeable. Mutable. Transformable. I know the subject I stated is “Values and Beliefs”. I started with identity because these aspects are the foundations for it. What we value and what we believe in determines: who we were, who we are, and who we will be. Although we have some core values and beliefs, their priority order may change, and their level of importance may change. Every substantial shift alters our identity in the slightest of ways. Then, with repetition, we become someone different. Sounds easy. Well, it’s that simple. Not quite easy, but simple.
So, what are values? The aspects of life that we decide to value. Freedom, independence, family, money, honesty, peace, well-being, loyalty, respect, trust… Each one of us has a unique set of these. And if, by any chance, two people share the same exact values, in the same exact priority order, they will have different lives. Because perception, again, changes the way a value is lived. For instance, a person who values freedom might enjoy the power it gives them to do everything they can, whenever they can. On the other side, someone may value freedom as the power of doing nothing whenever he feels like it. Same value, but a completely different interpretation.
